Tiger's backup is not enough against Snedeker

AUSTIN, Texas – Tiger Woods had some awesome moments – including hitting a right-handed shot under a tree and saving a tie-foot – but that was not enough to defeat Brandt Snedeker on Thursday at the Austin Country Club.

Woods struggled to hit the ball in windy conditions and had a bad day on the greens, falling to Snedeker 2 and 1 on Matchday 2 of the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play Championship.

He will need a win and help on Friday to qualify for the last 16 players and the knockout stages of the tournament.

Woods then refused to speak to the media, telling a PGA Tour media officer that "all I can do is hopefully get a point tomorrow and see if that's enough."

The best player in each of the 16 groups advances at the weekend. Snedeker now controls his fate, as a win Friday against Aaron Wise would win his place in the last 16.

Woods needs a win over Patrick Cantlay – who beat Wise 4 and 2 – and defeated Snedeker to advance. If Snedeker and Wise were tied, Woods would play in a playoff series with Snedeker to determine the winner of the group.

"The conditions were tough today," Woods told the media officer. "The wind was blowing and if you stayed there without bogeys, you would probably win your share of the holes, we both made some mistakes, but it made less mistakes than me."

The biggest of Woods arrived at the normal 13 by 13. When he was only hanging out by a hole, he was first going out of the tee with an iron and was pumping it into the water. This led to a double bogey 6 and allowed Snedeker to win the hole and climb 2 with a bogey.

Earlier in the round Woods had chosen to start the 10th start and was 100 yards from Snedeker, who had found the green. Woods hit a mediocre approach that got stuck under a tree, from where he managed to reach it at 5 feet by hitting him for left – handed. He converted the putt to save the hole, but it was one of the all too few highlights.

Snedeker, a nine-time PGA Tour winner, played with Woods 13 times in PGA Tour rounds and never beat him – a statistic he was not aware of.

"I know he's beaten me a lot," Snedeker said. "I mean, it's Tiger, I do not do much with him on Thursday or Friday, so if I play with him, it's probably late on weekends." Is typically where it is located. It is really very good in what it does. "

Not good enough Thursday. Woods needed 31 putts for just 17 holes and had trouble hitting close.

Snedeker won the third hole with a birdie, then returned with a fourth bogey. He picked up a birdie on sixth of normal 6, where Woods missed a five-foot shot. Woods went down with a bogey of three throws in the seventh, then a goal with a birdie in the eighth. He could never tie the match again.

After going from 2 to 14, Woods came back with a birdie from a fairway bunker on the 14th minute, knocking him down at 2 feet. But he could not make a birdie on Normal-5, where Snedeker put it in Hole 2.

"I'm probably the most hated man in Texas right now, like the last holes," Snedeker said. "I bet you my kids were probably looking for him late in the round."
