The Tigers announced a series of roster moves on Wednesday, officially selecting the right-hander contract Casey mize (as previously announced) and also selecting the outfielder contract Jorge Bonifacio. Mize, the top pick in the 2018 draft, will make his MLB debut against another debutant in the first round: right-hander White Sox Dane Dunning. Mize is seen as one of the game’s best pitching prospects and a potential core part of a rebuilding Tigers side – a side the club hope to be able to pitch at the top of their rotation until at least the 2026 season. He dominated his opponents in Class A Advanced and Double-A in 2019, working on a combined ERA of 2.55 with an excellent 106-23 K / BB ratio in 109 1/3 frames.
Bonifacio is no stranger to AL Central, having spent several years with the Royals as a right-back and designated hitter. He’s a career .247 / .319 / .408 hitter in 713 Major League appearances and is looking for a rebound opportunity after a PED suspension that more or less ended his tenure at Kansas City. Bonifacio made 21 home plate appearances after being reinstated from that suspension, but he had since been passed on the depths chart and was finally sidelined last November.
The injury of Castro, 26, deprives the Tigers of some versatility on the bench. He had already appeared at shortstop, second, third and three outfield positions in 2020 – while posting a respectable .276 / .364 / .379 slash in 33 appearances at home.
