TikTok ‘bathroom vandalism’ challenge hits Lincoln public schools

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) – A new TikTok challenge takes hold of social media, with kids damaging school bathrooms. It’s happening across the country and in a handful of middle and high schools in Lincoln Public Schools.

“Imagine what it would be like for someone to walk into your house and break and steal your things,” said McKenzie Ness, Lincoln High Senior.

Bathrooms are now clean, but over the past two weeks at schools like Lincoln High, the toilets have been destroyed by students.

“This is a worrying trend that we have worked hard to curb,” said Mark Larson, director of Lincoln High. He said the damage caused by the students included “rolls of toilet paper and rolls of soap and paper towels, things like that.”

Most students say this new TikTok challenge is upsetting. A group helping with the clean-up said they didn’t find it funny at all. “Vandalizing your school isn’t cool, even if it’s for a trend,” said Erin Swift, senior senior at Lincoln.

It’s not just at Lincoln High, two-thirds of high schools and colleges in Lincoln have reported similar damage. The Lincoln East principal sent a message, calling it “unacceptable”. She also asked parents to remind students that this is not “responsible and respectful behavior” that they expect.

Lincoln High staff decided to keep several of the bathrooms locked to minimize damage. They also tightened supervision and require students to log in and out of the toilet.

“It’s unfortunate when we have to reallocate sources that aren’t directly related to teaching and learning,” Larson said.

The students told 10/11 that they wanted to leave a message for the students causing the damage. “Don’t get swayed by things so easily. What’s cool might not always be right, ”Ness said.

School leaders said there will be consequences for students when they find out who is vandalizing bathrooms. They ask parents to talk to their kids and help them monitor their social media.
