Bella Poarch’s hypnotic lip-syncing video “M to the B” was TikTok’s biggest viral video of the year, TikTok reported this morning. Poarch was followed by 420doggface208’s iconic instant video on Fleetwood Mac’s ‘Dreams’ movie.
The rankings were revealed as part of TikTok’s year-end roundup of its biggest videos, trends, and creators. The rankings are not entirely scientific (rankings for viral videos, for example, are based on both ‘views’ and ‘impact’), but they do offer a representative overview of what dominated the app and which erupted beyond.
Other videos on TikTok’s viral list include Will Smith’s entry into the Wipe It Down challenge and Julian Bass’s superhero special effects video that has gone viral enough for draw attention from Disney Executive Chairman Bob Iger.
The company’s list of top designers is led by Charli D’Amelio, of course, and also includes household names like Addison Rae and Noah Beck. Jason Derulo is listed as TikTok’s Best Celebrity Creator, followed by Kylie Jenner and Lizzo.
Anyone who’s spent any time on TikTok could probably guess a handful of the best TikTok songs of the year. The number one chart went to “Savage Love (Laxed – Siren Beat)” by Derulo, with “Savage Remix” by Megan Thee Stallion in second and “WAP” in fourth. Like the other categories, TikTok doesn’t base these rankings just on plays, but also on metrics like the number of videos created and how often people interact with those videos.
The full list seems to illustrate TikTok’s big year more, rather than literally ranking all of the app’s successes. But to that end, the leaderboards do a great job of showing how many communities, trends, viral songs and more have broken out thanks to TikTok, editing tools like the green screen effect to the aesthetic like cottagecore.
