Former San Antonio Spurs superstar Tim Duncan has decided to step down as the team’s full-time assistant coach, a source said confirming a New York Times report.
Duncan, who is part of the 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame class, spent last season with the staff of Coach Gregg Popovich. However, he did not join the Spurs in the Walt Disney World bubble for the NBA restart, remaining in San Antonio to help LaMarcus Aldridge recover from shoulder surgery.
Popovich has often credited Duncan for being the key factor in creating and sustaining the culture that has helped Spurs win five NBA championships. Duncan has spent his entire 19-year career in San Antonio, winning 15 All-Star appearances, two MVPs, three Final MVPs and a Rookie of the Year award.
For the first three years after Duncan’s retirement, he was not an official member of the Spurs coaching staff, but was a frequent visitor to the team’s training facility. After Duncan agreed to become an assistant coach, Popovich indicated that he did not anticipate the all-time great to have a long tenure on the bench.
“Something tells me it won’t be his passion for life, but he’s going to be awesome this year,” Popovich said on Spurs media eve last season.
