Tim Duncan resigns as Spurs assistant coach

When Spurs hired Tim Duncan as an assistant coach, Gregg Popovich said: “It is only fitting that after serving faithfully for 19 years as an assistant to Tim Duncan, he returns the favor.

Now those jokes end.

Marc Stein of the New York Times:

Some former players – especially the stars – realize that coaching is not for them. It’s a grind that takes time. Many players prefer to enjoy retirement.

The writing was on the wall with Duncan when he failed to join Spurs in the bubble, instead staying with injured LaMarcus Aldridge. Maybe Duncan will find other ways to contribute to the organization that are less onerous than assistant coaching.

He has other things on his agenda – like being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
