San Antonio’s internal belief has always been a yearlong stint on the bench for Duncan, who is expected to return to his old role following retirement in which he made frequent appearances in the team’s training facility to provide to various Spurs a player development aid.

Some former players – especially the stars – realize that coaching is not for them. It’s a grind that takes time. Many players prefer to enjoy retirement.
The writing was on the wall with Duncan when he failed to join Spurs in the bubble, instead staying with injured LaMarcus Aldridge. Maybe Duncan will find other ways to contribute to the organization that are less onerous than assistant coaching.
He has other things on his agenda – like being inducted into the Hall of Fame.
