A father from South Carolina who killed his five children should be executed, a jury agreed, ignoring a plea for mercy from the victim's mother.

Amber Kyzer said Tuesday that the convicted murderer, Tim Jones Jr, 37, "showed no mercy to my children, but that my children loved him".

The sentence came after prosecutors claimed that life imprisonment would be tantamount to sending "Timmy to his room".

South Carolina has not executed detainees since 2011.

Thursday's unanimous decision was made by the same jury that sentenced Jones for the murder of the five children aged one to eight in August 2014.

If the panel of seven men and five women in Lexington County had been unable to reach a unanimous decision, Jones would have been sentenced to life in prison.

The jurors accepted his fate after about two hours of deliberation on the 21st day of the trial.

During the oral argument, the prosecutors asked the jurors to recall the shocking manner of the murders.

Jones admits to having exercised his eldest son as a punishment until he collapses and dies.

He strangled the other four, then drove aimlessly for nine days with the bodies in his car, depositing the remains in black trash bags in rural Alabama.

During the trial, Jones' father, mother-in-law, sister and two brothers all spoke up to demand that he be released without the possibility of parole.

Jones' father removed his shirt to show the tattoos of his grandchildren killed in the courtroom.

Ms. Kyzer also asked for the help of her ex-husband.

"He absolutely did not show any pity to my children," she said. "But my children loved it and if I speak on behalf of my children and not of myself, that's what I have to say."
