Timberwolves rookie swingman Anthony Edwards, the hero of the Timberwolves 102-101 comeback win over the Knicks on Wednesday, rejoiced after being delighted that RJ Barrett took the final blow.
Out of bounds, Barrett missed a short 19-foot step back on a competing Karl Anthony Towns with two seconds left to preserve the victory.
And Edwards, the top pick in the 2020 Draft in Georgia, said Barrett, the third pick in the 2019 Draft, was the guy the Timberwolves wanted to decide on the game.
“We told Jaden [McDaniels] try not to let Randle catch the ball, we’re going to make someone else beat us, ”Edwards told the Wolves TV show after the game. “Luckily RJ caught it and if he had made the shot we would have lived with it. Because that’s what we wanted to take. We didn’t want anyone to take it.
Edwards finished with 26 points after a big fourth quarter in which he passed Barrett for a late layup.
Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau said he should watch the movie, but Barrett’s job was to do the right read and had three options. It looked like rookie Immanuel Quickley was open on the right wing.
