DrLupo isn’t the only big-name Twitch streamer leaving for YouTube. TimTheTatman (aka Tim Betar) a announcement it will stream “exclusively” on YouTube Gaming starting September 2. He hasn’t explained the reasons for the jump, but it comes less than two years after he (along with DrLupo and Saqib “Lirik” Zahid) signed a multi-year deal with Twitch.
Twitch has not issued a formal response. This wish TimTheTatman did well on Twitter, however, claiming the streamer would “still be a king” for the service he left.
It is not yet certain that this represents a second wave of Twitch defections. Microsoft boosted the first round, paying Ninja, Shroud, and other top streamers to jump ship to Mixer. We wouldn’t expect a similar result, however. Mixer struggled to compete with its live streaming rivals, which led to Microsoft shutting down the service. The creators had to quickly find alternatives, and some of them returned to Twitch with exclusive deals. YouTube is in a considerably stronger position, even though it is not the dominant house for live game streaming.
Even so, the moves represent bets for TimTheTatman, DrLupo and others who could follow suit. While many great creators have an established YouTube presence for their on-demand videos, this does not guarantee that they will be watching live shows on Google’s service. Even so, it could be a blow to YouTube – and a blow to Twitch if it can’t retain its most famous stars.
