Rock ‘n’ roll icon Tina Turner has sold the rights to her six decade long catalog of music, including the hits “What’s Love Got to Do With It” and “The Best”, to BMG, the music company announced on Tuesday.
The deal means his name, image and the artist and writer’s shares in his recordings – which have sold more than 100 million records altogether – now belong to the media giant. BMG stated that he would be a partner with Turner in his musical interests and that Warner Music would continue to be Turner’s record company.
“Tina Turner’s musical journey has inspired hundreds of millions of people around the world and continues to reach new audiences,” said Hartwig Masuch, CEO of BMG, in a press release. “We are honored to take on the management of Tina Turner’s musical and business interests. It is a responsibility we take seriously and will diligently pursue. It is truly and simply the best.
BMG did not disclose the value of the deal, but industry sources said the revenue could exceed $ 50 million, according to the BBC.
“Like any artist, protecting my life’s work, my musical heritage, is personal,” Turner said in the release. “I am convinced that with BMG and Warner Music my work is in professional and reliable hands.”
Turner, 81, has received 12 Grammy Awards and will be inducted later this month into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame for the second time.
The “Queen of Rock ‘n’ Roll” is the latest legendary singer to sell her music catalogs.
In December, Bob Dylan, the pioneering troubadour whose songs became anthems of the civil rights and anti-war movements of the 1960s, sold his entire catalog to the Universal Music Group for around $ 200 million, according to one. source close to the case.
A month later, legendary folk rocker Neil Young sold 50% of his song catalog to the Hipgnosis Songs Fund, a British investment vehicle founded by music industry veteran Merck Mercuriadis.
