To buzzer: Purdue 81, Indiana 69 – In the room

Quick thoughts on an 81-69 loss to Purdue:

How did it happen: The Indiana defense offered little resistance for the first 10 minutes in Assembly Hall. The Boilermakers, thanks to hot perimeter shots, took a 29-17 lead at 9:27 of the first half. An angry Archie Miller, bewildered by his team’s performance, called for a time out. Everything that was said within the timeout by Miller had an impact. The Boilermakers scored just two points in the next 7:08 as Indiana drew less than two on a Race Thompson layup. The end of the half, however, was almost a disaster for the Hoosiers. After IU got less than two at 33-31, Purdue struck out seven straight points to stretch the lead to nine. Indiana responded with a 3 run by Jerome Hunter and a layup by Armaan Franklin just before the time expired in the half. The Hoosiers walked into the locker room dragging just four and feeling lucky after a disastrous start.

Indiana kept things tight for the first seven minutes of the second half and shot less than one at 50-49 on jumper Armaan Franklin with 13:12 to go. But the attack stammered out just as Purdue began to bring Trevion Williams to the post. In the Under-Eight media timeout, Williams had 10 points in the second half and the Boilermakers were leading 64-54. But even though Purdue’s attack slowed down in the final seven minutes, Indiana’s attack was even more inept. Archie Miller took a time out behind 67-56 with 5:22 and his team amid a five-minute basket drought. The Hoosiers wouldn’t come close to six the rest of the time as Indiana dropped their eighth consecutive overall to Purdue. Archie Miller’s record against the Boilermakers is now 0-6 with a 0-4 score at Assembly Hall.

Outstanding Interpreter: Jackson-Davis finished with 25 points, but only played nine minutes in the first half due to foul issues. The second player was 9 of 16 from the field and just 7 of 14 from the free throw line.

Statistics that stand out: Indiana shot him poorly from the perimeter and the free throw line. The Hoosiers were 3 of 18 of 3 (16.7%) and 16 of 29 on the free throw line (55.2%).
