Toby Keith and Ricky Skaggs received President Donald Trump’s National Medal of the Arts on Wednesday, around the time he was impeached for the second time by the House of Representatives.
The awards were presented by Trump in a closed-door press ceremony, the White House press office confirmed Thursday.
A representative for Keith told Fox News: “I have no comment at this time.” A representative for Skaggs told Fox News: “There will be no official statement other than what the White House is proposing.”
In the press release, the White House said Keith was selected “for making extraordinary contributions to American music. From humble beginnings in the Oklahoma oil fields, Toby Keith has gone on to become one of the most important songwriters of his generation “.

Skaggs was honored, according to the statement, “for his contribution to the American music industry.”
“Mandolin and violin virtuoso, Ricky Skaggs creates and produces bluegrass music that preserves the musical heritage of the most talented artists of his generation.”

Meanwhile, when news of the event broke, Twitter users weren’t happy.

“While we were busy impeaching Trump yesterday, two country artists Toby Keith and Ricky Skaggs thought it was worth receiving presidential medals from him. I would be ashamed,” wrote another.
“If I were Ricky Skaggs and Toby Keith, I wouldn’t accept the medals,” said someone else.
“Toby Keith and Ricky Skaggs shamed each other forever! They are now a bane on country music!” echoed another.

The House voted 232-197 to impeach the president for “inciting insurgency” after a crowd of his supporters besieged the Capitol on January 6 in an unsuccessful attempt to stop President-elect Joe’s certification of victory. Biden at the Electoral College.

Trump is the only US president to be impeached twice. He was first impeached by the House in 2019 for his relations with Ukraine, but the Senate voted in 2020 to acquit him.
