Todd McShay Calls Drew Lock, The Best Choice Of The Denver Broncos

The draft class of the Denver 2019 NFL Draft was considered by most to be a success, with most NFL Draft ratings having the highest rating. The way John Elway was able to navigate the franchise to find starters with the first two picks was impressive, but it was his second round trade with quarterback Drew Lock that hit the headlines.

According to ESPN's Todd McShay, the Broncos traded in the second round for Lock to be the best draw for Denver.

I really like the Broncos' strategy during the first two days of the project. First of all, they came back on Thursday and picked a talented ending at Noah Fant (Iowa), while adding two more choices. This trade allowed them to take Lock Friday night as a serious value. He has the best arm of class and great mobility. Frankly, I'm really shocked that he dropped out of the first round.

His tape was up and down in Mizzou, but let's be honest, Lock did not have much to work with. And over the three seasons or so that he started for the Tigers, he was replaced by three coordinators and was often at a disadvantage in terms of offensive assets and opposing defensive prowess. It's not necessary to throw him to the fire in Denver for the moment with Joe Flacco in town, so he can learn how to become an NFL quarterback before bringing his athleticism to Mile High. And since Lock was in fact the team's third choice, rather than a first-round player named the QB of the future, the pressure is a little less strong for Flacco. Denver did a good job of maneuvering this whole situation. Lock could be really special if developed properly.

I totally agree with McShay. If Denver had selected Lock with the 10th overall pick, the mat would have been removed from Joe Flacco and the team would not have had much to do in terms of extra talent.

Instead, they recovered an additional second round pick and ended up getting two starters likely to Noah Fant and Dalton Risner before making the move to get Drew Lock.

If Lock loses control and becomes the quarterback from the Broncos for a decade, this value selection will be fully realized. Still, if Lock eventually took the road to Paxton Lynch, the Broncos did not really sacrifice much to take the risk that they succeeded in this draft.

Overall, it was a good weekend for Broncos fans.
