Clemson superstar and presumed No.1 pick in 2021 overall on Friday Trevor Lawrence held its Pro Day. One element of the event surprised ESPN drafting expert Todd McShay.
In the last episode of the “First Draft” podcast, McShay opened up about what he saw at Lawrence’s Pro Day. With 16 NFL teams sending in scouts or front office members, McShay was stunned to see so many franchises represented. After all, no one is anticipating Lawrence to slide past the No.1 overall selection.
“16 NFL teams were represented (at pro day), whether it was a general manager, a coach, a scout… and that shocked me,” McShay said. “When Clemson told me 16 teams, I was expecting maybe five. Just knowing it’s a 99.99 (percent) situation, he’ll end up being the overall top pick in Jacksonville. “
Trying to explain why so many teams would have shown up for Lawrence’s Pro Day, McShay thinks part of his part is that the quarterback’s future opponents want to be one step ahead of their scouting. On top of that, the event was in a convenient location for many Boy Scouts.
“It’s likely that some teams want to self-test and see the ball come loose from his hand and see maybe if there’s a weakness or something he’s doing that they can catch up on because they’re going to have to play it, right? ” McShay said. “And the other thing that I think she’s a part of is the pandemic. And so many Boy Scouts live near Atlanta, Chicago, Charlotte, where the major airports are.”
The other factor that could have played a role in the busy Pro Day is the COVID-19 pandemic. According to McShay, many scouts just wanted an excuse to leave their homes after being unable to hit the road much over the past year.
“And I think there are a lot of Boy Scouts in this mid-Atlantic region who are sitting at home, watching their kids every day, trying to type their notes and doing all these other things,” said McShay. “’You know that I have the chance to interact with other human beings, to be around footballers and to be around football?’ And I think part of the reason there were so many teams, they were like, yeah, give me half a day before I have to go home and take care of all the other stuff. “
Just days after his Pro Day, Lawrence underwent non-throwing shoulder surgery, by Tom Pelissero of the NFL Network. Lawrence’s return schedule puts him on track to be ready for action this fall.
“Surgery on Trevor Lawrence’s left (non-throwing) shoulder has just been completed and ‘has gone really well,” the source said, ”Pelissero tweeted. “Doctors expect Lawrence – the alleged top pick in the overall draft – to be 100% for training camp.”
