Ahead of his Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame induction next month, Todd Rundgren is broadcasting it all. He just said he would not attend the induction ceremony, despite a performance the same evening a few hours away. And now he details his frustrations of working with Kanye West on Donda.
“I’m one of the few artists not on Kanye’s album,” Rundgren said in a recent interview with Ultimate Classic Rock. “I have three Kanye stems albums on my computer. Because I kept getting called by Kanye to add vocals to the record. When he got to the home stretch in July, I just said, ‘That’s enough for me. I have no idea if any of this is used. You don’t get a lot of feedback from him on what it is.
Rundgren said he was invited into the fold of producer 88-Keys, but quickly lost his illusions. “I’m still a producer and I don’t just want to be like driftwood in the process,” he said. “If I can contribute anything, fine. If I can’t, let me know. I’m getting out of here […] I may be there somewhere. There is so much junk on this record!
He then called West a “shoe designer”. “He’s just a dilettante at this point. No one would regularly make records like that unless they had some stupid money to spend, ”Rundgren said. “Nobody rents a stadium to make a record. Nobody steals the whole hip-hop world just to croak a syllable, just so you can tell everyone was there.” He continued:
My involvement lasted for a year, and by the end I understood why they packed it all in a hurry and released what is obviously really raw, unprocessed stuff. It’s because Drake was leading the whole process. He was too scared that Drake would pass him, so he hurried and released the album on the weekend before Drake could release his. And in the end, Drake still ate his lunch.
