Tom Brady came to Bucs to match Manning’s feat, says QB coach

Until Tom Brady himself tells us, we’ll never really know, officially, why he decided to leave the New England Patriots and sign with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. We do have some good theories, however. Maybe he wanted to find a place where he would have more of a contribution as a veteran QB. He could have wanted a new challenge, as he had been with the Pats for 20 years and had won everything to win several times.

Bucs QB coach Clyde Christensen thinks he knows at least one of the reasons Brady left, because he heard it from Brady himself.

Brady wanted to emulate Peyton Manning

Christensen went on CBS Sports Radio’s “Zach Gelb Show” last week and revealed that Brady told him about one of the reasons he left New England. Brady apparently wanted to match his former rival, Peyton Manning, and win a Super Bowl with a second franchise.

“There was a part of him the first time I met him… He said one of the things that was really fun and stimulating to him was what Peyton did in Denver. There was something about this challenge that struck [Brady] law. “Hey, I’ll go see if I can do this again somewhere else.”

“I think the challenge was huge for him. Twenty-one years is a long time. Sometimes it’s time for a change. He mentioned several times that he was impressed by it and that it seemed fun and stimulating to him.

This is how you know Brady is just on a different level from most people. Entering his 43-year-old season, after 20 years and six Super Bowls, Brady looked into the challenge of winning a Super Bowl with a new team – a team that had made 7-9 the previous year – and s’ is said, “Yeah, I think that would be fun.” But that’s why Brady is Brady.

Wanting to “match” Manning is also very Brady. Manning has been out of the NFL for five years and Brady still uses him as scoreboard material. Never mind that Manning’s situation is different, that neck surgery caused a mutual separation of paths with the Indianapolis Colts, and that’s why he signed with the Denver Broncos. For Brady, if a legendary quarterback has done something he hasn’t, it’s time to start figuring out how to get to that top.

Brady has accomplished more than almost any quarterback, and his records will last a long, long time. But it seems he’s never really satisfied, which makes him such a fierce and relentless contender.
