The video output at the house of Spider-Man: in the Spider-Verse – released today in digital and March 19 on physical media – includes a special feature called "Alternative Universe Mode", which is a long version of the film that includes alternative scenes, deleted scenarios, additional characters (like Ganke!), etc. One of the most interesting alternative sequences is where Miles Morales trains to become Spider-Man … watching a Spider-Man movie.
Sitting with the filmmakers Rodney Rothman, Bob Persichetti and Pete RamseyI have learned the existence of this secondary plot. Instead of Miles discovering how to become Spider-Man from an old comic strip, he first learned to become the webslinger from an audio commentary featuring Tom Cruise and James Cameron.

Rodney Rothman: We have taken a lot of things in the film for good reasons, but it gives you a glimpse of the creative process in the film years. Here is an example of what they are talking about … There is a Doc Ock sentence that directly refers to Doc Ock's most famous line Spider-Man 2. Is Tom Cruise's content in the alternate universe version? So there was a whole period of time where Miles, rather than learning to be Spider-man through a comic book, learned by watching the movies. There was a version of a movie on Spider-Man in the Miles universe on Spider-Man, but it was a movie directed by James Cameron with Tom Cruise in the role of Spidey. Yes. Spidey. And it was James Cameron and Spidey and Tom Cruise on the audio.
Peter Ramsey: Yes, it was literally the director's commentary with guest actor Tom Cruise.
Rodney Rothman: And real guest star Spider-Man.
Peter Ramsey: He was the technical advisor of the film.

For those who do not know, James Cameron originally developed a cinematic version of Spider-Man in the mid-90s, before the arrival of Sam Raimi. The 47 pages of Cameron scriptment (script part, processing part) have been online for years. Many people at the time speculated that Leonardo Dicaprio would be Cameron's Peter Parker and that Arnold Schwarzenegger would be Dr. Octopus. Tom Cruise Peter Parker in the late 80s while Cannon Films was developing an adaptation of the comic book on the big screen. This would have been a fun reference for hardcore fans, but as noted by the filmmakers, the whole concept was a bit difficult to explain to the general public.
