Tom Cruise Space director Doug Liman takes stock

When can we expect to see Cruise in space, aka his natural habitat?

Tom cruise has spent the last decade making films that allow him to pursue his daredevil hobbies, like standing in front of the world’s tallest building and flying a helicopter like he just flew the Federal Reserve. So when it was revealed that Cruise and Edge of tomorrow director Doug Liman were teaming up to make a movie in outer space, Cruise fans around the world said, “Yeah, that makes sense.”

Steve Weintraub from Collider recently had the opportunity to speak with Liman about his movie Locked, about a couple (Anne Hathaway and Chiwetel Ejiofor) who decide to fly Harrods amid the COVID-19 pandemic. During the interview, Liman shared a few updates on the highly anticipated Tom Cruise space movie, including how in the (outside) world they managed to secure the project:

“From the first conversations we had about the film… how do you make sure he’s been the center of the conversation. So we wouldn’t be talking about this movie if we hadn’t found a way to navigate the insurance component. So we went through it, but there wouldn’t have been a conversation about this movie without determining the insurance … it’s the same in Locked Down, one of the first conversations was about the insurance, because of the pandemic … You can’t make a movie without having an insurance conversation. And [whether] you talk about going to space, [or] you’re talking about shooting london in the middle of the pandemic, you know, insurance is going to dictate if that’s actually possible.

When asked whether or not this project was something he expects to start filming within a year or two, Liman categorically responded in the affirmative, saying, “Oh yeah. It’s not just an abstract idea. It’s a film. So while he has confirmed that the project is still untitled, it’s safe to assume that at least a full treatment of the film exists, if not a finished draft. (Liman is attached to the project as director and writer.)

Naturally, Liman couldn’t say exactly what his next project would be, given that COVID cases are currently at an all time high. But he revealed that he has something on deck that could potentially start filming this year:

“I’m not sure any of us know what 2021 will look like yet, because of the pandemic. I have something I’m working on and I hope I can shoot. But I don’t think anyone can know 100% yet. ”

Locked is currently airing on HBO Max.
