Wes Anderson has spent the past 20 years building one of the best lists of eccentric weirdos lately. cinematographic history, a traveling company of eccentrics to build around the ground-ground stars like Owen and Luke Wilson and Bill Murray. Now Anderson has reportedly landed one of the biggest names of all for his next (next) movie: Tom Hanks, who will apparently star alongside Murray and Tilda Swinton in Anderson’s sequel to this fall’s The French dispatch.

It is by THR, who reports that famous birthday and Genial certified DJ, Smiling Man Tom Hanks will now add his star power to the still-untitled film. This same report suggests that Hanks’ role in the film will be small, but you know how it goes: once the Anderson company has its hooks in you, it’s hell to get out. (This is ssomewhat similar in this regard to the fanfare serious character actors employed by the Coen brothers, although it should be noted that Hanks is also one of the few actors to have been and done with this pair. Really, the power of The Ladies Killers knows no bounds.)

Very little is currently known about this new Anderson film, beyond the fact that it should be shot in Spain, this Adrien Brody is also expected to play, and that Anderson, as usual, will direct his own screenplay. Which leaves us with nothing to do, really, but wildly speculate on what kind of role Hanks could play once he gets into these carefully composed shots. Maybe he’ll play the guy, Cloud Atlasstyle and face the villain of the room – maybe a surly viscount with an immaculately tailored jacket. Or maybe he’ll lend those Hanks-ian charms to some kind of memorable service worker, which gives a little crazy wisdom to other characters. Or maybe he’ll just do a scene with Willem Dafoe. Dthe: WI would really have loves to see Tom Hanks do a funny little scene with Willem Dafoe.
