Tom Holland improvised in the Spider-Man audition with Robert Downey Jr.

• In a conversation with Daniel Kaluuya for Variety’s Actors on Actors series, Tom Holland said his agents told him to stick to the script before his Spider-Man audition for “Captain America: Civil War”.
• However, Robert Downey Jr. started “riffing” as soon as the audition started, so Holland followed him and started improvising, ignoring the advice of his agents.

Tom Holland said he ignored his agents’ advice not to improvise during his Spider-Man audition for “Captain America: Civil War,” and just started “riffing” with Robert Downey Jr.

Holland was speaking to fellow MCU actor Daniel Kaluuya as part of Variety’s “Actors on Actors” series, and actor Peter Parker recalled the grueling seven-month audition process that involved six auditions. Holland said he was competing against six other potential Spider-Mans, all of whom were tested with Iron Man himself, Robert Downey Jr.

“This is the best audition I have ever done. Him and I had a fight. My agents told me that Marvel likes you to learn the words exactly – you can’t improvise. And then, on the first take, Downey just completely changed the scene, ”Holland said.

The actor, who until then had acted in a few films including “The Impossible” and “In the Heart of the Sea”, threw out the advice of his agent not to improvise.

“We started playing with each other, and I mean, to sound like a dick, I called my mom after and I was like, ‘I think I have it.'”

Holland didn’t hear a thing for six weeks, after which he was called in for another test – this time with Captain America actor Chris Evans.

“At that point, it had been such an amazing experience that if I hadn’t had the part, I would have felt like I had at least achieved something to get to this point,” a- he declared.

Holland only really heard about Marvel after learning he got the part by reading an article online, which caused him to break his laptop with excitement.

Holland made his Spider-Man debut in “Captain America: Civil War” as the third live-action Peter Parker after Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. However, Holland was convinced that he would be fired from the role after this movie because “Civil War” hadn’t been released yet, and I just didn’t hear anything from anyone, ”he said.

Holland went on to star in “Avengers: Infinity War” and “Avengers: Endgame”, as well as a second solo film in “Spider-Man: Far From Home”. A third solo release is currently being filmed and is slated for release in December.

In his interview with Kaluuya, Holland was promoting his new movie “Cherry”, directed by “Infinity War” and “Endgame” directors Joe and Anthony Russo. Holland could be in the conversation about the rewards for his role as an Army veteran with drug addiction starting to rob banks.

Meanwhile, Kaluuya, who played W’Kabi in “Black Panther”, is hotly tipped for her second Oscar nomination for his role as Fred Hampton in “Judas and the Black Messiah”. He got his first for “Get Out” in 2017.
