Spider-Man: No Coming Home has just been officially announced as the third film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe franchise co-produced by Marvel Studios and Sony Pictures. There was a time when the studios would go their separate ways and it seemed Tom holland maybe finished playing webslinger, but luckily they’ve sorted things out. However, the actor confirmed that Spider-Man: No Coming Home will be the last movie under his contract with Sony / Marvel, but that doesn’t mean he’s finished wallcrawling.
Collider recently met Tom Holland as part of the upcoming release of cherry on Apple TV +. The conversation finally turned to the new Spider Man film, which Holland confirmed was the last film of his contract. But that doesn’t necessarily mean he’s stepping away from the role. The actor said:
“[Spider-Man 3] would be my last [under contract]. So I always told them if they wanted me to come back I would be there in the blink of an eye. I loved every minute of being a part of this amazing world. It has changed my life for the better, I am so lucky to be here. If they want me to come back I will be there, if they don’t I will leave at sunset, a very, very happy person because it was an amazing trip.
However, it is probably not entirely exact. Back in the days when Sony and Marvel resolved their issues and sparked a new deal to share Spider-Man for a third film in the franchise, the deal also included an appearance in “a future Marvel Studios movie” outside of that. Based on the rumors we heard about Spider-Man: No Coming Home making the Multiverse a big part of Peter Parker’s story, it’s likely the appearance will be Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. So when Tom Holland says No way home is his last Spider Man under his current contract, he probably means for the Spidey franchise itself.
While Tom Holland is looking forward to continuing to play Spider-Man in the future, let’s not forget that the deal between Marvel and Sony to share Spider-Man almost fell apart. So will it be so easy to negotiate a new contract that will allow Tom Holland to continue playing Peter Parker and his webhead alter ego in the Marvel Cinematic Universe? Holland seems to think so:
“From what I understand, it’s that an agreement between the two studios has already taken place. I don’t think they’re going to have the same issues they had by the time we were going… was that Spider-Man 2? Far From Home was out, then it all happened between Sony and Marvel. I think both studios have fixed the problem, and I don’t think it will be a problem in the future. Having said that, I’m just the actor and I did participate in a few phone calls during this process. But I think they love working together, I think they’ve found a way that it can be beneficial for both studios, and I’m just kind of like a kid in the middle, between two parents in an argument. .
There is also a chance that Tom Holland could continue playing Spider-Man outside of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Some have speculated that the introduction of the multiverse would allow Peter Parker to leave the MCU and enter the Spider-Man universe designed by Sony Pictures, which includes Venom and the next one Morbius. This would be the perfect opportunity to have two different universes with the same Spider-Man and allow him to appear in one or the other.
While Tom Holland is happy to continue playing Spider-Man, don’t expect the webslinger’s adventure to be a quick follow-up to No way home. The actor has been so busy since its inception Spider-Man: Homecoming that he’s ready to take a break for a little while. Holland recently told USA Today:
“I’m going to take a break and travel the world. This is the first time since I logged in to [Spider-Man: Homecoming] that I don’t have a contract with someone. I could go skiing because it’s something I haven’t really had the right to do, because it’s obviously a dangerous sport. I have been very careful over the years which is why I have become obsessed with golf because it is the only sport I can play without getting injured.
This is something fans usually don’t think of when it comes to actors in these great franchises. Studios have invested in these stars to play characters who generate a lot of income, so they need to be safe in whatever they do in order to protect the franchise from falling. But it’s good to hear that Holland will be able to take a break for a bit. Hopefully when he’s ready to get back to work, Marvel and / or Sony will be ready to put Spider-Man back into action.
