A guy they studied: Familiarity is an important thing in the NFL and this has been a huge factor for the Steelers to pull the trigger of the Minkah Fitzpatrick trade. Coach Mike Tomlin and General Manager Kevin Colbert spent a lot of time studying Fitzpatrick during his participation in the NFL draft in 2018, as safety was the key position they were looking for. The Steelers had the 28th overall pick in the draft, where they selected Terrell Edmunds, and Fitzpatrick was 11th overall at the Miami Dolphins.
"We really studied Minkah closely in the process leading up to the project," said Tomlin. "It was no secret that we were in the market for high-end security. In fact, we ended up appointing Edmunds later in the round. We did due diligence, we looked at Minkah. We knew it was a bit of a pipe dream because of its overall position in the project. After going there during the two professional days of Alabama, interviewing him, spending time with him, this really made this process fit for Kevin and me in terms of decision-making because we had spent this time with him, we evaluated him and we had a lot of comfort in his abilities.
"I think it's our general level of comfort with the player. It's no secret that we were in the market for safety when it came out. We have done due diligence on all of these types. This was a guy for whom I went to Tuscaloosa twice in the writing process. When you talk about opportunities and you talk about opportunities, there was a sense of preparation, a sense of knowing among us about his abilities, his character, his football abilities and his ability to integrate with what we do. All these boxes had been checked before the draft.
