Much has been done during the 3rd week without clashes between the top 25 opponents of the AP. This quickly led to the thought that this would be where we would see one of the first big upsetting weekends. Well, a top 10 team was on the ropes and a trio of the top 25 teams ended up taking defeats, but for the best teams in the country, it was more like the dozen top started to part with the pack.
The big move we expect in Sunday's new AP Top 25 is a leap for UCF after its dominant win over Stanford. The Cardinals struggled to start the year for several reasons, including KJ Costello getting noticed during the opening match against Northwestern, but it is still a Power Five program quality and the Knights seemed small and slow in a 45-27 win.
BYU made the headlines on Saturday with an overtime victory over a ranked USC, which, combined with its Tennessee win over Rocky Top, should lead the Cougars to their top-25 debut in 2019. Arizona State should help them join after his victory at Michigan State.
Here's how we expect the new AP Top 25 Sunday.
1. Clemson (1): The Tigers gave Amari Rodgers his first touchdown of the season in a 41-6 victory at Syracuse, showing a new ridiculous weapon to be used by this offense for the pursuit of another national championship. Rodgers made his debut in 2019 last week against Texas A & M, just 166 days after suffering an ACL tear during spring training.
2. Alabama (2): Saturday's win over South Carolina put Najee Harris in the limelight as the day's skill for Tide's offense, while Tua Tagovailoa has collected five touchdowns and no interceptions with a career record of 444 yards, becoming the first Bama quarterback to win 400 and five … never.
3. Georgia (3): The arrival of Notre Dame for the top 10 next week in Athens, Georgia, could not be better for the Bulldogs, who seem to be clicking on all the cylinders and occupying the business at all levels up to now in 2019.
4. LSU (4): A slow start to the house after a moving victory in Texas is excusable. LSU rectified the situation in the second and third quarter-finals with a 65-14 win over Northwestern State, which should be enough to keep its place, just behind the Bulldogs.
5. Oklahoma (5): Another nonsensical double threat line for Jalen Hurts (289 passing yards, 150 rushing yards, four touchdowns in total) in a 48-14 win over UCLA as the Sooners prepare for the Big Match 12 next week against Texas Tech.
6. State of Ohio (6): The first start on the road for Justin Fields was quite easy thanks to an impressive performance from the Buckeyes defense. Indiana was limited to just 42 yards rushing in 31 attempts and allowed five sacks. Fields' second, J.K. Dobbins racked up 193 yards in a 51-10 win.
7. Our Lady (7): It was a key match to boost Ian Book's confidence before he was faced with one of the toughest tests of his academic career in Georgia. next week. Book scored five touchdowns and set a career record, and the Irish were never beaten in a 66-14 win over New Mexico.
8. Auburn (8): A 55-16 win over Kent State was the most successful of the Auburn offensive, led by Bo Nix. It took place just in time with a road trip to Texas A & M as the first game of the double game "SEC on CBS" next Saturday.
9. Florida (9): It seemed that the Gators were about to collapse as they trailed behind the 11 Wildcats … and then Feleipe Franks was eliminated from the match. Substitute Kyle Trask clinched victory and led Florida to a stunning 29-21 win in Lexington, Kentucky, with UF scoring 19 unanswered points on the road against a talented team.
10. Michigan (10): The Wolverines were on leave in the third week.
11. Utah (11): No adjustment expected after a 31-0 routine win over Idaho State.
12. Texas (12): Sam Ehlinger was almost perfect as a result of his prolific performance against LSU, and the Longhorns showed little signs of a hangover in a methodical 48-13 win over Rice.
13. UCF (17): I think that the way UCF distinguished Stanford, particularly early in the game, will give them a positive momentum in the top 25. The Knights have a chance to double the success of next Saturday against Pitt on the road after the Panthers have fallen over with Penn State.
14. Penn State (13): The Penn State attack still remains to be done before we qualify the Nittany Lions for Ohio State's threat in the Big Ten East, but Micah Parsons and the rest of that defense have staged several huge saves in the third downhill and in the red areas. A tough 17-10 win against Pitt will not be a good thing for the polls, but she offers James Franklin's employees a lot to do to keep going.
15. Wisconsin (14): The Badgers were on leave during the third week.
16. Oregon (15): The Ducks are currently in action against Montana.
17. Iowa (20): We expect a slight jump in the polls for the Hawkeyes as a result of the fierce victory at Iowa State. Technically, the Cyclones do not count as a ranked win for the week, but they are respected by voters – just outside the top 25 last week – and doing it on the road despite many weather delays should be rewarded .
18. Texas A & M (16): No major changes in the hierarchy for the Aggies after taking care of the business against Lamar.
19. State of Washington (20): The most fearsome striker from the state of Washington in Houston was not as tight as expected, giving Anthony Gordon a decisive experience away from Pullman before the start of the Pac-12 program. UCLA is the next step for the Cougs, and then a huge challenge on the road to Utah in the fifth week.
20. State of Boise (22): The Broncos are currently in action against the state of Portland.
21. Cal (NR): Saturday's win over North Texas will not be what will push Cal on top, but it helped push the Bears to 3-0. Three victories, including a victory in Washington, give Cal a profile worthy of the top 25, and I bet a few voters left Cal last week for missing the late night victory.
22. Washington (23): Well-deserved victory for the Huskies after the rain-delayed debacle against Cal last week. The 1920s are going to be very fluid for teams with a loss, so it's conceivable that the Huskies could land anywhere in this range, but I think they end up falling behind Cal.
23. BYU (NR): With victories against Tennessee and USC, the Cougars have one of the best CVs in the country. Since BYU did not appear on any ballots last week, there is probably a limit to the height of its debut, but I bet they get enough votes in the 20's to rank among the top 25 of consensus.
24. Virginia (25): It was a strange turn of events in Charlottesville on Saturday night, while Florida's Cam State running back half was two meters from the decisive goal. The UVA in Charlottesville was the victim of a first defeat at the ACC conference in the state of Florida in 1995 when Warrick Dunn fell just in front of a goal line.
25. State of Arizona (NR): It was a nasty game and an even uglier way to win a failed placement, but winning at Michigan State is about the same quality as the one you'll find in the country.
Expected abandonment project: Michigan State (18), Maryland (21), USC (24)
