Tony Hsieh, the ex-Zappos boss who injected a fortune into downtown Las Vegas and became the face of its revitalization, died on Friday at the age of 46.
Megan Fazio, spokesperson for Hsieh’s side company DTP Companies, confirmed Hsieh’s death in an email Friday night. She did not disclose the cause of death.
“Tony’s kindness and generosity touched the lives of everyone around him and forever lit the world,” the statement said. “Providing happiness has always been her mantra, so instead of mourning her transition, we ask you to join us in celebrating her life.”
He added: “On behalf of all employees and staff of DTP Companies, we would like to extend our deepest condolences to Tony’s family and friends who have all lost Tony as a loved one, visionary and friend. Tony was highly regarded by all his friends and colleagues in the tight-knit family of DTP companies, so this heartbreaking tragedy is one that affects many involved.
Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman called Hsieh’s death a “tragic loss.”
“Tony meant so much to Las Vegas, still dreaming, working to inspire and leading others to create a new vision for tomorrow. Our prayers and sympathies to her family, ”she said.
Zappos’ new CEO Kedar Deshpande, its former COO, told the company in an email, obtained by the Review-Journal on Friday night, that the online shoe seller “has lost our inspiring former leader.” and that “many of you have also lost a mentor and a friend.
“Tony played such an important role in building the thriving Zappos business we have today, as well as his passion for helping to support and animate our corporate culture,” Deshpande wrote.
Zappos has announced that he will explore ways to celebrate Hsieh’s life in the coming days.
Hsieh moved Zappos from Henderson to Old Las Vegas City Hall in 2013. He also started a side company, then called the Downtown Project, to invest $ 350 million in real estate, restaurants, tech startups and other businesses in the Fremont Street area, becoming a dominant owner there.
Hsieh retired from Zappos and was replaced as chief executive in August without an official announcement from the company he ran for two decades after embarking on a home-buying frenzy this year in the wealthy ski town of Park City, Utah.
