Tony Khan and others pay tribute to ECW after AEW rampage

At this week’s AEW Carnage recordings, AEW President Tony Khan thanked the crowd for coming to the show. Since they were in Philadelphia, Khan also wanted to pay tribute to ECW and some of the wrestlers who worked for this promotion.

Khan asked Taz, Chris Jericho, Jerry Lynn and Dean Malenko to step into the ring. Khan said one of his favorite things to do as a kid was coming to Philly and watching wrestling.

Taz then took the mic and talked about the others in the ring, as well as how AEW reminds him of ECW.

“For me – as an original ECW and all that – it was an amazing time, and I know a lot of you are old enough to remember and be a part of it,” Taz said. “What we have here is fucking crazy because it’s like a new generation of ECW, like on steroids and growth hormones.”

Taz ended his comments by saying that AEW is the best place he’s ever worked. CM Punk then made his way to the ring.

“I just wanted to say that I feel extremely left out because I was the ECW Champion and no one invited me,” CM Punk joked about his run for the ECW promotion under the WWE banner. “I just want to make a point that I think is a very important distinction to make because I would never have been ECW Champion without a guy like Taz. If it wasn’t for a guy like Chris Jericho. Sure, if it weren’t for Dean Malenko or Jerry Lynn.

Jericho went on to explain how he tried to talk with Paul Heyman for a year and be booked into ECW and finally got a chance in 1996 in Philly.

Malenko was brief and thanked the fans. They gave him a “Thanks, Dean!” Lynn said the Philly fans never let him down and they were the “craziest mf’ers I’ve ever seen.”
