Tony Romo has beaten only five golfers combined in his previous three starts on the PGA Tour. Thursday, in the first round of the Safeway Open 2019, he shot twice less than 70 years and beat much more than that.
The former Cowboy QB started at the back of the Silverado Country Club and shot a ball under 35 on that side before getting closer to the same number up front. He managed a birdie in the last two holes – one on a birdie 20 feet and the other on a footboard – to finish below the average of the day.
Romo beat both his gaming partners and most players. The problem for him is that he did most of his damage with his putter. It's good for a ride, but that does not seem sustainable. This is to be expected. When something requires as much luck as playing from one round to the other, it makes sense that an amateur like Romo can gain as much ground as possible.
"Whenever I participate in any of these events and that I have the chance to get an exemption, I have somehow the opportunity to see what it's all about. you're not good, "Romo told Golf Channel. "It's very obvious that this has been done over the past year, so a lot of work has gone into it, I'm doing well, so it was nice to come here and continue like this."
He also drove the ball better than the field average, which is both amazing and auspicious for a weekend start.
We are entering the weeds though. What is important here is that a former QB who had not yet broken his record on the PGA circuit did so with relative ease Thursday in Napa. Adam Scott is currently running 7-under, which means Romo is just a back burner, five seconds ahead.
Remains to know if he can keep his pace, but after 18 holes, Romo is well placed in the cut line and is preparing to play his first weekend on the big boys circuit.
