The former ghostwriter of President Trump said that writing "The Art of Deal" was the biggest regret of his life and wanted the 1987 bestseller "not even printed."

"I knew he was a bad guy when I read the book," Tony Schwartz told Major Garrett, CBS News correspondent, for this week's report. Podcast "Take away". The two men sat down for lunch at the ViceVersa restaurant in New York.

"Trump is not only willing to lie, but he does not care, does not feel guilty and does not care," Schwartz said. "There is a void inside Trump, there is an absence of soul, there is an absence of heart."

Garrett covered over 75 Trump campaign rallies in 2016 and noted that rally fans had brought "Art of Deal" with them to events. "They considered it almost like a sacred text," Garrett said.

The book catapulted Mr. Trump to new heights when it was released, partly fueled by his article in The New York Times. Chris Lehmann-Haupt wrote "Jay Gatsby lives" and "Trump makes believe in the American dream again".

Mr. Trump offered Schwartz $ 250,000 to write "The Art of Deal", as well as half the royalties of the book, which he still receives today. Schwartz calls this "blood money" and has donated checks for the last 2.5 years to charities.

So why did he write it? "I took it for money," Schwartz said. "The idea of selling. I mean, the term was coined for what I did."
