Tim Allen and Richard Karn, perhaps better known as Tim “The Toolman” Taylor and Al Borland of “Tool Time” on the ’90s prime-time comedy “Home Improvement”, reunite in a short story contest show on History Channel.
The unscripted series, dubbed “Assembly Required”, allows contestants to compete against each other to build wild inventions and device mashups, including an ice cream melter / leaf blower, a lawn mower and something called ” barbecue bike, ”Variety reports. It will be presented on Tuesday at 10 p.m.
Allen, 67, described it as a “sort of live version of ‘Tool Time,” to reporters at a Television Critics Association press conference on Thursday, with Karn, 65, and YouTuber do-it -yourself April Wilkerson, who will be the show’s resident builder expert.
The 10-episode hourly series has been filmed before – remotely, which proved difficult for a game-based show with physics and scale. The Panel’s criticisms based on Zoom have also been frequently challenged by technological disruptions – highlighting the lack of access to public services in many rural areas.
“You realize that across the country, Wi-Fi and being able to access the outside world is not so easy for everyone,” Karn said during the press panel.
One advantage of the aloof aspect, Wilkerson added, is that applicants use their own equipment in their own workspaces and this could encourage viewers at home to start their own projects.
“I think the more people who participate, the more it inspires others to participate as well. Because, I think, at the root of our DNA we all want to build and create, ”she said.
Allen and Karn starred in “Home Improvement” together for eight seasons from 1991 to 1999.
