The Los Angeles Chargers have officially fired head coach Anthony Lynn after a 7-9 2020 season. As such, the search is on for the Chargers’ head coach candidates. General Manager Tom Telesco will have his choice to build around QB Justin Herbert.
Why was Anthony Lynn fired?
Despite winning the last four games of the season, Lynn’s decision making and mismanagement of the game ultimately cost him his job. Twelve of the Chargers’ 16 games this season have been single scorers. The Chargers are 5-7 in those games.
Perhaps the biggest knife in Anthony Lynn’s job security is quarterback shining star Justin Herbert. The property will want to capitalize on Herbert’s coin. As such, they’ll hire a new coach who will maximize Herbert’s talents and start winning matches.

Here are the names you need to know for the Chargers head coach position.
Brian Daboll, Buffalo Bills Offensive Coordinator
While Anthony Lynn was also Bills’ coach at one point, Brian DabollAllen’s creativity and development at Buffalo sets him apart among the Chargers head coach candidates. The Bills offense is currently second in passing offense, seventh in total offense and sixth in score per game. The Bills are fifth in offensive DVOA and third in DVOA.
Herbert’s features are reminiscent of Josh Allen. If Daboll has had that much success with Allen, chances are he can replicate it with Justin Herbert. The ultimate goal for the next Chargers head coach will be to make Justin Herbert one of the best in the game. Daboll has proven he can do just that.
Daboll has been part of several winning cultures. He started out by winning the Super Bowls in New England and won NCAA championships with Alabama before being hired by Buffalo. His pedigree is among the best in the country, and I expect him to be the Chargers’ top head coach candidate. To provide even more connections, Tom Telesco, CEO of Daboll and Chargers, went to high school together. Should be shippers’ first call.
Arthur Smith, Tennessee Titans Offensive Coordinator
Tennessee Titans offensive coordinator Arthur Smith could also be on the line. Smith is credited with resurrecting Ryan Tannehill’s career in Tennessee. Smith rose through the ranks with the Titans and is now reaping the rewards. General manager Tom Telesco should know Smith, as he worked for the Titans while Telesco was in Indianapolis.
Once again, the Chargers will look to get around Herbert. As such, catching quality offensive players will be a top priority. While Smith has only been calling games for two seasons, the Titans became one of the best offenses in the NFL while he was at the helm. With a young quarterback already on the roster and plenty of weapons around him, Smith’s potential could be huge.
Matt Eberflus, defensive coordinator for the Indianapolis Colts
What if the Chargers decide to seek out a defensive head coach candidate instead? Tom Telesco first worked for the Colts before joining the Chargers. As such, Colts defensive coordinator Matt Eberflus could be a name related to work through Telesco’s network. If the team is looking for a coach who handles the game better than Anthony Lynn, Eberflus would be a strong candidate in this race.
The Chargers were 22nd in the defensive DVOA this season and 25th last season. The Colts currently sit eighth in the defensive DVOA. An upgrade on this side of the ball could lead to a better record.
If that happens, the team could promote quarterback coach Pep Hamilton to CO. Hamilton also worked for the Colts during Andrew Luck’s early years in Indianapolis. Hamilton has been Justin Herbert’s main developer and is already quite comfortable with him.
