In the absence of a real new flagship to follow in the footsteps of last year’s Snapdragon 865 Edge + and while we continue to wait for the midrange Edge 20 5G to break the cover, we’re happy to report that the Moto G100 has just been officially released in the US with little to no fanfare.
Unlike the early members of the budget Moto G family, this thing certainly isn’t a cinch, pairing a top-of-the-line Snapdragon 870 processor with reasonably generous 8GB RAM. This actually makes the G100 Motorola’s most powerful mobile device yet, which is why we’re absolutely thrilled to see that it only costs $ 499.99 in an unlocked GSM variant that’s compatible with AT&T and T-Mobile.
Technically, the phone’s list price is set at $ 599.99, but if you hurry you can save $ 100 on Motorola’s official website in the US, no questions asked and no strings attached.
At $ 499.99, the Moto G100 is undoubtedly a prime contender for the title of best budget 5G phone available in 2021, but only for T-Mobile customers. At least for now, the 6.7-inch handset can’t be used on Verizon (at all) while forcing you to settle for 4G LTE speeds if you choose to enable it on AT&T.
Compared to Samsung’s $ 500 Galaxy A52 5G, for example, the G100 comes with a bigger screen and a heavier 5,000mAh battery, as well as a faster chipset. The rear-facing triple camera system, however, isn’t necessarily better, consisting of a 64 MP primary shooter, 16 MP ultra-wide-angle lens, and 2 MP depth sensor. , and the same goes for the 16 MP selfie snapper.
But there is also a second 8MP camera mounted on the front of the Moto G100 5G for handling ultra-wide selfies, which is … cool. On the less shiny side of things, the “water-repellent” design of the handset is obviously inferior to the dust-resistant and water-resistant IP67 construction of the aforementioned A52 5G.
We’re not particularly impressed with the G100’s 215-gram weight, 90Hz screen refresh rate tech, or side-mounted fingerprint scanner, either, but the headphone jack and microSD card slot are great. still there, and with 128GB of internal storage space, the high-end (ish) Android 11 smartphone is undeniably a solid five-Benjamin affair.
