As the space race continues, it has been revealed that Jeff Bezos’ Blue Origin saw more than a dozen of his key executives and engineers leave the company almost immediately after Bezos launched into space. .
Many of the engineers who left were said to have been part of Blue Origin’s astronaut lunar lander program and left in the weeks following Bezos’ trip. Shortly after its space flight, the company gave all of its full-time employees $ 10,000 in unconditional cash bonuses. CNBC has learned that two of its best engineers have gone to Blue Origin competitors, Elon Musk’s SpaceX and Firefly Aerospace. Sources revealed that many believed the bonus was intended to try and keep talent in response to a number of employees filing notices to leave the company after the July flight.
Many unannounced departures spoke of frustrations with senior management and a heavily bureaucratic structure, though the company stressed that Blue Origin continues to grow its team. Since Bezos hired Bob Smith as the company’s CEO in 2017, Blue Origin has failed to hit multiple deliverables. It remains to be seen whether future projects will stay on track or be further delayed.
