Technology investor John Borthwick said the smart speakers had several layers "problematic" and claimed that the devices were used for surveillance.
"I would say that there are two or three layers of problematic diapers with these new smart speakers, smart headphones currently on the market," Borthwick told Yahoo Finance in an interview published on Sunday.
"And the first is that, from the consumer's point of view, from the user's point of view, these devices are used for what – it's hard to call it anything other than surveillance," he added.
Borthwick told Yahoo that it needed more levels of regulation allowing consumers to control the data.
"I personally think that as a user and as a person who loves technology, who wants to use technology, you should have a lot more rights to the use of your data than we do." We have today, "he said.
Bloomberg reported in April that Amazon workers were listening to what consumers are asking their Alexa devices to do.
Similar products are offered by Google and Apple – and Bloomberg noted that companies also listened to voice commands from users.
Bloomberg has released another report according to which Facebook was listening to voice commands from the user made via the Messenger application.
The companies said they used this information to improve their products.
Google has terminated the procedure and Apple has announced that it would automatically exclude voice samples collected according to Yahoo.
Since then, Amazon has allowed users not to share their voice commands with their employees, according to Yahoo.
