The Toronto Raptors say Kyle Lowry has been diagnosed with a sprained left ankle and his condition will be updated if necessary.
The Toronto Eastern Conference semi-final series against the Boston Celtics begins Thursday.
With just over three minutes left in the first quarter of Game 4 on Sunday, Lowry was dribbling down the field when he was interrupted by Brooklyn Nets goalie Chris Chiozza. Lowry’s left foot stepped on Chiozza’s foot, and the Raptors point guard started limping right away.
After a time-out, Lowry returned to the game. After limping on offensive possession – which ended in a 3-point for Toronto – Lowry fouled to stop the clock and evade the game.
Instead of walking to the Raptors bench, Lowry walked straight to the locker room.
Without Lowry, Toronto earned a 150-122 victory over the Nets to win a playoff sweep for the first time in franchise history.
The Raptors were 12-2 in games without Lowry this season, but coach Nick Nurse didn’t want that to be the norm going forward.
“You definitely want your best players there, without a doubt,” Nurse said after the game. “But sometimes you don’t have a lot of choice. It’s something we’ve gotten used to in this league. You have to go out there with who is healthy and who is available. You have to think about that. there’s a good chance you can figure out. one way to win. That’s what we’ll do anyway. “
Lowry, who averaged 19.4 points, 7.5 assists and 5.0 rebounds in the regular season, averaged 16 points, 5.3 assists and 8.7 rebounds in the Raptors’ first three playoff games.
Andrew Lopez of ESPN contributed to this report.
