SEATTLE (AP) – Luis Torrens hit a ninth inning single to score the winning run, and the Seattle Mariners beat the Texas Rangers 2-1 on Wednesday night.

It was the Mariners’ 38th point game, leading the major leagues, including 24 wins.

Jarred Kelenic got a loaded walk to tie the score at 1 in the sixth inning.

The rookie then passed Dennis Santana (1-2) to start the ninth, moved up to third on the single with a Jake Fraley out and scored on Torrens’ push to the wall in the center right.

“That’s what we need, that kind of energy… and that’s what made the difference today,” Torrens said of the rookie center fielder’s dynamic play.

When asked if there was a chance he would stop, Kelenic replied, “Negative. (I thought) I have to come in second and put the pressure on them.

Drew Steckenrider (4-2) threw the ninth for the win. Four relievers combined to give up a single hit in 3 2/3 innings to keep the Mariners in the game.

It wasn’t easy, but our throws certainly gave us a chance, ”said Mariners manager Scott Servais.

The Rangers have lost seven of their eight losses after ending a 14-game losing streak on the road Tuesday night against the Mariners.

Seattle starter Taylor Anderson allowed one run and six hits in 5 1/3 innings in his first home game with the Mariners since acquiring Pittsburgh. But the Mariners couldn’t do anything against Texas starters Spencer Howard and Taylor Hearn, who have been paired for several weeks.

Howard struck out three hits while allowing two hits in three innings. Hearn has lasted four innings as manager Chris Woodward prepares him to return to rotation next week. He allowed just two hits and struck out three, but was injured with four walks.

Hearn hit JP Crawford with a pitch to start the sixth, then after two pop outs, gave Abraham Toro a single and a nine-step walk. A four-length walk to Kelenic tied the game. It was the second game in a row that a Texas pitcher had scored late in the tying point.

“There was a lot of pressure there,” Woodward said of Hearn, “and he just couldn’t execute the pitch.”

Nathaniel Lowe doubled up to lead the second and scored on the fly from DJ Peters’ sacrifice to give Texas a 1-0 lead in the second.

STATUE MARTINEZ

Edgar Martinez and Ken Griffey Jr. are together again after the Mariners unveiled a new statue of Martinez on Wednesday just yards from the one commemorating Griffey outside T-Mobile Park. Martinez and Griffey are the only members of the Mariners Hall of Fame.

The bronze statue, like that of Griffey created by artist Lou Cella, captures Martinez in the midst of the momentum and recreates the iconic double of the designated hitter to win Game 5 of the 1995 AL Division series against the Yankees, the race Seattle’s deepest in the playoffs.

TRAINERS ‘ROOM

Rangers: LHP John King (right shoulder inflammation) pitched a scoreless inning Tuesday night for Triple-A Round Rock in his first rehab outing. He gave up on a single and released a walk. He will travel with the team to Oklahoma City for his next appearance later this week. King has been on the injured list since July 7.

Rangers: RHP Mike Foltynewicz (2-10, 5.77) will close the series on Thursday afternoon.
