Total War: Warhammer 3 revealed, and Cathay confirmed, in extremely metallic trailer

Yes, it was Total War: Warhammer III. Last night we shared how Creative Assembly teased something with a series of animated shorts. It seemed like this was just a new DLC, and further community digs have shown clues suggesting something bigger is about to happen. Fortunately, we didn’t have to wait long to find out what.

We know this has been going on for some time, but Creative Assembly now has officially announced the third entry in its popular series of strategy games set in the iconic Warhammer Fantasy universe.

Races confirmed for the new game so far include fan favorites Kislev, the Four Chaos factions (Khorne, Tzeentch, Slaanesh and Nurgle), and in a surprising move, Cathay. We’re sure there’s more to come, but Cathay is definitely an interesting choice. Essentially the Chinese version of Warhammer Fantasy, they hardly received any special attention in the old table line, which means the opportunity is ripe for CA to fill in the blanks. If only the studio had experience creating China-based strategy games …

Parameters referenced in the announcement material include “Realms of Chaos” and “Mysterious Lands of the East”. We imagine Kislev will also have fun in the snow. But enough about it, what you really want to see is this extremely metallic trailer:

The plot summary for the new game reads: “As you embark on a new grand campaign, you will be tasked with saving or harnessing the power of a dying god.” While many have speculated that this could be a reference to the infamous “ End Times ” event that ushered in the formal closure of the Warhammer Fantasy line (which will be replaced by Age of Sigmar), Creative Assembly said this is not what happens, apparently:

“Total War: Warhammer III is set around the reign of Karl Franz. Our primary source is Warhammer Fantasy Battles 8th Edition, although we have and will continue to use older editions for inspiration. “

Either way, it looks like Warhammer III is setting up a showdown of epic proportions, and we can’t wait to hear more. In the meantime, our editor Richard has spent way too much time analyzing the above trailer.

Total War: Warhammer III is slated for 2021 on PC via Steam and the Epic Games Store, and is available for pre-order now. In the meantime, Total Warhammer 2 is getting a 15% discount on Fanatical.
