Toyota switches to electricity from 2020: announces a massive offensive on electric vehicles

[ad_1]

Toyota, after years of abandoning 100% electric cars, announced today a vast offensive with a new platform, global models of various types as well as ultra-compact and pedestrian BEVs.

The new plan contemplates the deployment of all-electric vehicles from 2020 (starting with the Toyota C-HR BEV twins and Toyota IZOA BEV in China) and Toyota says that 2025, all models must have an electrified version (at least hybrid).

in the early 2020s, Toyota would like to present 10 BEV models around the world, including six global models, based on E-TNGA platform.

If we look at the general plan, however, you will notice that BEV's planned sales are small compared to hybrid and plug-in hybrid actions. Interestingly, Toyota does not see much market share for hydrogen fuel cell cars by 2050 either.

"There is still a lot of work to be done to make EVBs popular, and we will focus on vehicle development and stable supply, improved durability and battery reuse.

We regularly prepare a framework to take the challenge in depth, putting all the elements in place, including the creation of new business models.

Working broadly and openly, we collaborate with partners as part of our efforts to contribute to a better society. "

Six global BEV models

One of the most daring announcements of the Toyota press conference concerns six new fully electric models, which the Japanese company intends to develop in the coming years using its e-TNGA platform.

These models will be developed with partners or alone.

The list includes:

  • Compact car (with Suzuki and Toyota's Daihatsu subsidiary)
  • Crossover medium
  • Medium sedan
  • Medium van
  • Average SUV (with Subaru)
  • Large SUV

E-TNGA platform

New E-TNGA platform for the six global BEVs reminds us of Volkswagen's SEM platform. This will offer different type and size of vehicles, different battery capacity and with front wheel drive, rear wheel drive or two-wheel drive.

Toyota ultra-compact and pedestrian BEVs

In addition to standard size cars, Toyota has also announced the creation of ultra-compact and pedestrian BEVs (probably mainly for Japan) to meet the mobility needs of young and old.

concerns

Toyota's message also includes two concerns – the first concerns the overall profitability of consumer electric vehicles and the second, the battery supply. That's why Toyota works with different battery manufacturers.
