Toyota Tundra TRD Pro 2022 payload can’t beat the Ranger

New Toyota Tundra is a big truck, no doubt about it. Well it is a full-size pickup, which means most drivers would expect accordingly fat numbers on its technical sheet, but the ’22 Tundra is beaten by some smaller trucks in important specifications, such as payload. Any single Tidy that Ford currently manufactures has a higher maximum payload than Toyota’s knottiest new Tundra, the TRD Pro.

The TRD Pro has a maximum payload of 1,455 pounds because Shipping portal Noted. The Tidy, on the other hand, will support from 1,478 pounds to 1,905 pounds, depending on the finish. Note that the term that automakers usually refer you to is “up to”.

The new Tundra payload the note is Up to 1,940 pounds, but the TRD Pro will be carry much less. It’s funny how the phrase “until” doesn’t apply to the price, however. When discussing the price, the clause is almost always “from”. Toyota is not the only company to do this; all automakers are doing it. Expressions such as “until” and “from” are common practice.

But it’s a practice that, in this case, can make the Tundra’s specs confusing for those unfamiliar with pickups. There is a difference between trucks that can tow and transport, and those that are considered efficient trucks. The Tundra TRD Pro is very much in the performance camp.

TThe TRD Pro is powered exclusively by a hybrid transmission in the new generation model, which means that the latest all-terrain Tundra in the range has to accommodate an electric motor and a battery. In that sense, it’s one of the few production models in the world to be an off-road-specific hybrid pickup.

If you take a look at the specs, something like the Ford raptor, you will see that it has an even lower payload of (a measly) 1,400 pounds. Obviously, there is an inverse relationship here between off-road capabilities and payload capabilities. But the problem with the ’22 Tundra and the current Ranger is that even the Tundra’s maximum payload of 1,940 pounds isn’t far from the Ranger’s 1,905-pound maximum.

I’m not sure this will help the Tundra come out of the shadows of last-gen reviews, which were mostly related to its significantly lower towing and payload ratings than its rivals.

Really, though, what are you carrying over 1500 pounds anyway?
