PHILADELPHIA (CBS) – Listen before drinking. New information on pesticides in beer and wine.
In a study involving five wines and 15 beers, traces of herbicide were found in all but one trace.
The chemical, glyphosate, is used in Roundup.
The study was conducted by an advocacy group of the US Public Interest Research Group.
Bud Light Adds nutrition labels to beers
Brands like Coors Light, Miller Lite, Budweiser, Corona, Heineken, Guinness, Stella Artois and Sam Adams have been found to have traces of glyphosate.
The US PIRG states that pesticide concentrations are not necessarily dangerous, but are of concern given the potential health risks.
A branch of the World Health Organization has stated that glyphosate can cause cancer, but it is important to note that the concentrations found in beers are lower than what the EPA considers a risk.
A spokesperson for a national trade association called The Beer Institute says that even if an adult drank more than 140 glasses of wine a day, it would not be enough to consider a significant risk.
