Among the novelties and seasonal promotions, the February issue of Trader Joe in the February issue of the Fearless Flyer was a "not so confidential memo" for customers.
The grocery chain has announced that it will take more action to reduce plastic waste and other packaging. As people became more and more aware of the need to reduce their plastic consumption, Trader Joe was facing increasing criticism for "overuse of packaging", especially in the product section.

The retailer said that he was listening to customer feedback about the problem and had therefore stopped offering single-use plastic bags in the country's stores (already banned in all department stores in California). In addition, Trader Joe's stated to have replaced plastic bags with biodegradable and compostable options, which we have recently noticed in stores in San Francisco and Oakland.
The store adds that they have also replaced the polystyrene trays that were used in packaging products with compostable trays.
The other changes that Trader Joe's introduced gradually are:
- Sell more products in bulk, instead of being packaged in plastic
- Eliminate plastic sleeves on greeting cards and replace them with compostable material
- Eliminate plastic packaging for flower bouquets and replace with renewable material
Since China has drastically reduced the amount of recycling waste that it has been buying, more emphasis has been placed on the "reduction" part of "reduce, reuse, recycle" with respect to plastic. Much of the world's plastic waste never ends up being recycled, but ends up in landfills or in the ocean. The Zero Waste initiative in San Francisco leads the country in this area: more than 80% of its waste is disposed of in landfills.

Apart from the product section, Trader Joe's did not specify whether or how it could reduce other types of packaging waste.
"As we complete these milestones in 2019, on an annual basis, we are eliminating over 1 million pounds of plastic from our stores," says Trader Joe's flyer. "Thank you, we are listening."
