After another outing early in the season, serious short and long term questions have surfaced for the Portland Trail Blazers. Damian Lillard’s recent comments on the Portland roster have combined with a limited asset pool to put the Blazers in a tough spot. The hurdles the Blazers face took center stage in Bleacher Report’s three-year power ranking forecast.
Bleacher Report’s Mo Dakhil placed the Blazers at No.23. In the standings, Dakhil focused on the lack of high-profile trade pieces in Portland.
The only real chance to upgrade the roster is to trade CJ McCollum and possibly Jusuf Nurkic. Portland has never really been a free agent destination, and next season the Blazers already have $ 131 million on the books. They will have to look to the commercial market to jump, and that doesn’t seem likely.
When it comes to the Blazers’ pipeline of young prospects, Dakhil delivered mixed reviews.
Portland’s best young prospect is Anfernee Simons, who hasn’t really burst onto the scene. Beyond that, its core begins to reach its thirties. The Blazers didn’t prepare for a post-Lillard era, and that’s understandable as they were looking to build around him.
But now that Lillard’s future hangs in the balance, the Blazers will need to start planning their next phase.
