Netflix released the teaser trailer for Both popes Thursday.
Fernando Meirelles' film follows Cardinal Bergoglio (Jonathan Pryce), who asks permission of Pope Benedict (Anthony Hopkins) to retire in 2012 after being frustrated by church leadership. Pope Benedict instead calls his hardest critic and future successor to Rome to reveal to him a secret that shakes the foundations of the Catholic Church. Once in the Vatican, the two very different men confront elements of their past in order to find common ground and forge a future for their faithful around the world.

The trailer opens on Pope Benedict XVI who plays the piano for Cardinal Bergoglio, who will become Pope Francis. The men discuss the Beatles and while Benedict says that he is familiar with the band, he confuses his song "Eleanor Rigby" for one person.
BenoƮt later confronts the new Pope Francis about his critics. "You think you know better," Benedict said before the new pope said that they are no longer "part of this world".
"You know, the hardest thing is to listen, to hear his voice, the voice of God," Benedict said to Bergoglio. The future Pope later specifies that his priority is to satisfy the 1.2 billion believers in the church.
Excerpts from the two men who spend time in the Vatican and Bergoglio attend a football match in a bar.
"There is a saying: God always corrects a pope by presenting the world with another, I would like to see my correction," Benedict told Bergoglio at the end of the trailer.
The world premiere of the film will take place at the Telluride Film Festival. Both popes will be in some theaters on November 27th before being added to the streaming service on December 20th.
