CBS NEWS CHIEF WASHINGTON CORRESPONDENT MAJOR GARRETT INTERVIEWS ACTING WHITE HOUSE HEAD OF PERSONNEL MICK MULVANEY

SEA. May 8, 2019

WASHINGTON DC.

GARRETT: So it is said, Mr. Mulvaney, that Donald Trump Jr. has been summoned to appear today by the Senate's Intelligence Committee, headed by a Republican. True?

MULVANEY: I understand that's true, yes. I discovered it just before coming here.

GARRETT: Implications?

MULVANEY: I have no idea. Um

GARRETT: Scared?

MS. MULVANEY: Again, I do not have an opinion on this because it is a private citizen and not a member of the administration. . That being said, the fact that the president's son has received a subpoena from a Republican-led committee – and listen, I'm for bipartisanship on Intel committees. I think one of Adam Schiff's big shortcomings is to politicize the Intel Committee in the House. So I have no difficulty with bipartisanship, but assign the son of the United States president to appear and not be at least warned, I thought – say in bad shape.

GARRETT: So what you are telling me is that there was no heads-up.

MULVANEY: I … I did not know it.

GARRETT: It's true. Do you believe the president did?

MULVANEY: I have no idea. In fact, in all fairness, I do not know because he left for Florida today before …

GARRETT: You do not want to?

MULVANEY: All I can tell you is what I know, and I know I did not know.

GARRETT: Agreed. Let's just say, ladies and gentlemen, that Mick Mulvaney would be able to know.

MULVANEY: In most cases – well, again, maybe not, because again, he is a simple citizen and not a member of the administration. But it would be very unlikely that it would end up in the White House and I would not know it.

GARRETT: Let me ask you this–

MULVANEY: Possible, possible but unlikely.

GARRETT: Possible but unlikely. So-

MULVANEY: I'm not involved in the president's business. His legal affairs concerning his business, his legal affairs concerning his family, I do not do it. I occupy myself from the west wing of the government.

GARRETT: It's true. But this is a more than general concern. I mean, everything related to something like this should rise to your level.

MULVANEY: I have no idea – zero, and I do not invent anything – I have no idea what the factual allegations are. I mean, I know it's about a Trump Tower discussion or something like that. But again, my knowledge of this comes mainly from reading media reports because I'm not involved in that at the White House.

GARRETT: So I want you to talk to my audience nationally …

MULVANEY: I thought I was talking to your national audience.

GARRETT: –About this question. Because they've heard, I guess, something from the Senate Majority Leader, Mitch McConnell, earlier this week, which was "the record is closed," so they say, "you know what, I'm a little bit of agreement. " But then they hear the republican-led intelligence community – the president's son, subpoena. It does not sound like a classified case. What would you say to them?

MULVANEY: They are two different people. They share the same name and Don Jr. is certainly the son of the president. But I think Mr. McConnell talked about the fact that the chair was exonerated. There was no collusion or obstruction, end point, end of history. It is now time to move on to government business. Does this mean that other people can or have not done something else? I have no idea, but I think that's what Mr. McConnell was talking about, namely the implications for the President of the United States. There was no reason for McConnell to talk about Don Jr. This is not what will happen. He spoke of the president.
