The mother of Trayvon Martin, the black teenager killed during a controversial shootout in 2012, announced that she was running for election in Florida after becoming an activist against gun violence in the years that followed the death of his son.
Sybrina Fulton announced Saturday in a statement that she would run for the Miami-Dade County Commission. The seat is open in 2020, after the end of the legislature, current Commissioner Barbara Jordan, opposing Fulton to Miami Gardens Mayor Oliver Gilbert, in the elections, according to the Miami Herald.
Since George Zimmerman shot Trayvon Martin, 17, in 2012, she co-wrote a book and helped found a non-profit organization in memory of her son. She has also participated on national television. Zimmerman was acquitted in the case.
"Since 2012, I have tirelessly advocated for empowering our communities and making them safer," said his statement. "But the work is not over. I am proud to announce that I will represent District 1 on the county commission. "

"Our county must continue to move forward so that our families are safe from violence, can afford to live in Miami-Dade and have access to well-paying jobs," he said. she continued. "I am ready to take care of these and many other issues within the county government.
Martin's death and Zimmerman's subsequent acquittal sparked rage and protests, sparking a national debate on racism and gun laws, which then led to the formation of the Black Lives Matter movement.

The Trayvon Martin Foundation is headquartered in Miami Gardens. The district that Fulton will represent if she is elected to the Miami-Dade County Commission. The main purpose of the organization is to provide "emotional and financial support" to families who have lost their children because of gun violence, according to its website.
Fulton and Trayvon's father, Tracy Martin, founded this organization with the goal of "channeling their immeasurable sorrow to the immense strength needed to bring about positive change."
