TreVeyon Henderson, Cameron Martinez, Cade Kacherski and Xavier Johnson win Ohio State Player of the Game title against Tulsa

Nelson Mandela once said “the future belongs to our youth”. This phrase seems to apply to the current Ohio State football team.

After a 41-20 victory over Tulsa on Saturday, Ohio State named its All-Round Players of the Game on Sunday. Two freshmen – true running back TreVeyon Henderson and redshirt defensive back Cameron Martinez – won the distinction in offense and defense, respectively.

When it comes to special teams, senior linebacker Cade Kacherski and junior wide receiver Xavier Johnson – both without a presence – earned exceptional recognition after combining three tackles in return cover.

Henderson was a lock to win the offensive player of the game after his record-breaking performance on Saturday. The true first-year rookie broke Archie Griffin’s previous one-game race record for an Ohio State rookie. His 277 rushing yards are the third most Buckeye running in a single game in school history.

Martinez, along with real freshman Denzel Burke, stood out as young high school stallions against Tulsa. The two combined for seven total tackles and five passing deflections, but Martinez took the game-of-the-game advantage when he sealed the victory with a 61-yard intercept return for a touchdown.

Kacherski recorded the first tackle of his career in Ohio State against Tulsa, while Johnson saw the game time on all four units from the kickoff, punt and return.

Henderson will look to keep rolling and the young defensive backs will look to help Ohio State’s overall defense improve as the Buckeyes continue their season next Saturday against Akron, with a kick-off set for 7:30 p.m. on Big Ten. Network.
