Trevor Lawrence should consider staying at Clemson

As the New York Jets work their way to the No.1 pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, questions have arisen as to whether Clemson’s quarterback Trevor Lawrence would like to quit university to play for them. Not everyone thinks Lawrence’s decision to enter the NFL Draft is a slam dunk.

In ESPN’s “ Monday Night Countdown, ” NFL Hall of Fame quarterback Steve Young explained that Lawrence is staying at Clemson. According to Young, the Jets don’t have a clear roadmap for success as a franchise at the moment, and Lawrence could find himself in a bad position going into the NFL.

“Don’t go to a team that you know won’t be good for a long time and think, ‘Oh, I can put them on my back,’ Young said. “Peyton manning and Troy Aikman were two guys who joined bad teams, but there were already building blocks. They already had a plan. The Jets don’t look like a team with a plan. I would rather go to the Cincinnati Bengals. There are reasons not to go in this direction. Right now, as the Jets are, I might think about going back to school because I don’t want to spend my career trying to carry a team on my back.

Young points to the current Jets quarterback, Sam darnold, as an edifying tale for Lawrence. Darnold showed a lot of promise coming out of USC, but things apparently went off the rails for him with the Jets.

Trevor Lawrence, you want him to play for 15 years, ”Young said. “Sam darnold did, and is his career flourishing? Absolutely not. Is it possible that Sam darnold out of the NFL in three years? Can you imagine that? Yeah, I can imagine that. I doubt it, but what I’m saying is if you go out in the wrong place without help, your career could be seriously limited when you want to play 10 or 15 years.

Eventually, Young admitted that Lawrence had “no choice” to go out due to the money involved. Former NFL defensive tackle Booger McFarland, however, raised another point of concern. Presumably, the Jets head coach Adam gas will be fired at some point this year, and the team will have to replace him. The uncertainty about it would be another reason for Lawrence to think twice about his decision, according to McFarland.

“I need to know who is going to train me because we have all seen Adam gas take Sam darnold, mobile, athletic and can do all the throws, and he’s ruined it. We don’t even know if they can get a first round pick for him. If I am Trevor Lawrence, I want to know who will be the head coach of the Jets. If I’m Joe Douglas, you make sure Trevor Lawrence is on board with this guy.

Recently, Lawrence bristled at whether he would make the 2021 NFL Draft. On Monday, Clemson’s quarterback said he would prefer not to sign anything just yet.

“My state of mind is the same and I really don’t want to talk about it anymore, honestly,” Lawrence said during his first media encounter since being released from quarantine. “I’m just trying to enjoy my last few months here if that’s what it’s going to be. Whatever I decide to do, you’ll find out in January or February. I’m not trying to make noise. I don’t want more people talking about me than they already are. My thing is, I’m not gonna get stuck. I leave the door open to all my options. That’s really all I’m going to say about it.

“People want me to say that no matter what, I quit school. And that’s not something I’m going to say. It’s as simple as that. I’m not going to get stuck like this. “
