Tribune Media President Larry Wert left the company yesterday after Nexstar finalized the acquisition of the Chicago broadcaster.

On September 16, the Federal Communications Commission approved the sale to Nexstar, based in Irving, Texas. The acquisition was announced in December 2018 after the failure of Sinclair Broadcasting's takeover attempt due to antitrust concerns.

Wert, 63, began overseeing the company with its 42 television channels, including WGN-TV / Channel 9 and the cable subsidiary WGN America, in 2013 after 15 years as President and CEO of NBC, WMAQ- TV / Channel 5. A native of Riverside has worked in the broadcasting industry for 40 years and started as an account executive at KABC-TV in Los Angeles in 1979.

"I am proud of what we have been able to build with our assets and acquisitions after bankruptcy," Wert said in a statement. "I think (the purchase of Nexstar) is positive for everyone, including local viewers."
