The FIA confirmed Thursday that Whiting had died from a pulmonary embolism. Christian Horner of Red Bull added, "I am deeply saddened by the announcement of the terrible news of the death of Charlie Whiting last night. Charlie has played a key role in this sport and has been the referee and spokesperson of the reason as race director for many years.
