The upcoming showdown between Mike Tyson and Roy Jones Jr. received a lot of attention, but much of the talk surrounding the game centered on its rules and regulations.
The California State Athletic Commission is sanctioning the fight, which takes place just outside Los Angeles, as an exhibit with no official winner, CSAC executive director Andy Foster explained in an interview with MMA Fighting earlier. this week. No official winner will be declared, Foster said, because unlike a sanctioned bout, there are no judges in an exhibition bout.
Following Foster’s comments, social media platform Triller – which is promoting this weekend’s event – issued a statement appearing to contradict this information, claiming that a winner will indeed be announced for the fight and that the score will be made by judges of the WBC.
In a statement sent to MMA Fighting, Triller co-owner Ryan Kavanaugh said the company is not flouting the rules and regulations set by the California commission.
“At Triller, we have no problem with the commission or with Mr. Foster and we don’t intend to contradict what they might have said,” Kavanaugh wrote in an email to MMA Fighting. “We have a close relationship of almost two decades with the Governor and Mayor’s Office and the State of California and we would appreciate it if the record was restored.
“Specifically, we never meant to imply that the CSAC was marking this or deciding on a winner. We are 100% convinced that this is not correct. The CSAC has provided a referee, and that referee is there to make sure the fighters are safe and to make sure they are fighting by the rules. He will not score the fight or decide on a winner. Instead, the WBC is committed to scoring and electing a winner. They have three judges who will judge remotely (due to COVID and as other fights have been provided recently) on behalf of the WBC, not on behalf of the CSAC, who will decide the winner and judge the fight.
In a separate statement, Triller said the WBC judges “score and a winner will be determined using those scores as a basis.”
So while the WBC will declare a winner, the California commission has not sanctioned any judge and will not recognize the result.

WBC President Mauricio Sulaiman addressed CSAC in a statement sent to Yahoo Sports.
“The only authority is the California State Athletic Commission,” Sulaiman wrote. “The WBC is celebrating this great event and is offering a special honorary award to Tyson and Jones Jr. with a unique WBC belt.
“For more entertainment and technology demonstration, there will be three famous judges in an unofficial capacity.”
As Foster has previously stated and Sulaiman has confirmed, Tyson and Jones Jr. will receive a title belt once their fight is over. The event can be purchased on a pay-per-view basis for $ 49.95 and features a full sub-card that includes fully sanctioned fights.
For his part, Foster previously said that there was absolutely nothing wrong with enjoying the Tyson vs. Jones Jr. game. But the rules are in place for a reason because this fight is contested as an exhibition.

In Kavanaugh’s initial rule statement, he said the show was more than just fun. Bets could be taken on the outcome through official partner DraftKings in three states: New Jersey, New Hampshire and Illinois.
