A man was shot and killed on a TriMet bus in southeast Portland near 26th Avenue and Hawthorne Boulevard early Sunday night, police said.

Officers attended just before 5:30 p.m. and found a man who had been shot. The victim was taken to hospital where he died of his injuries, police said.

The incident marks the second homicide in as many days in the city.

On Saturday, a man was found dead after what appeared to be a shooting near Gilbert Heights Elementary School in the Powellhurst-Gilbert neighborhood.

A reporter from The Oregonian / OregonLive reported that police cars had recorded part of Hawthorne next to Safeway on the 2800 block of Blvd.

Homicide detectives are investigating the incident. Police did not make an arrest, spokesman Sgt. Kevin Allen said.

Sunday’s incident marks Portland’s 56th homicide this year, making 2021 the city’s deadliest year since 1994, when 55 people were killed.

This year’s tally, which includes two fatal shootings by police, puts the city on track to break its previous record of 70 homicides in 1987.

TriMet spokesman Tia York said the agency was providing the police office with security footage of Sunday’s incident.

“Our thoughts are with the loved ones of the deceased, as well as our operator and those who were on the bus at the time of the incident,” she wrote.
