A dozen people stranded on an isolated island in Louisiana by Tropical Storm Barry are rescued by the US Coast Guard.

The rescue took place at Isle de Jean Charles, a parish community in Terrebonne isolated by the rising waters caused by the storm. Isle of Jean Charles is about two hours south of New Orleans.

Petty Officer Lexie Preston told The Associated Press that some people were on the rooftops and that four people and one cat had already been taken from the island by helicopter. She added that a boat was also traveling to the area to help the rest of the population leave the island.

The Coast Guard reported that no rescued people, including four elderly people, had been injured, reported WWL-TV.
